At the 8th Accession Conference in May 2026 the EU confirmed that Albania had, overall, met the Cluster 1 (Fundamentals) interim benchmarks and set closing benchmarks for the cluster's chapters, putting the EU and Albania in a position to start closing negotiating chapters; on 14 July 2026 it provisionally closed its first three chapters (25 science and research, 26 education and culture, 30 external relations). The government targets concluding negotiations by 2027 and membership by 2030 — its own goals, not EU-confirmed dates.
